  • Why Consider Orthodontics Before Replacing Missing Teeth

Modern methods of tooth replacement such as dental implants are highly effective at restoring smiles, but occasionally our dentists at the Cosmetic Dentistry Center will suggest patients consider orthodontics prior to replacing missing teeth.

    Why Orthodontics May Be Necessary

This can be the best solution if a tooth or teeth has been missing for quite some. The reason for this lies in the way teeth shift position if there is a space in your mouth, creating less space for an implant tooth and potentially changing the way your teeth bite together. Orthodontics will move your teeth back into the correct positions which helps ensure there is adequate space for dental implants and that the final results will look great.

You Need Healthy Gums for Orthodontics

Prior to having any orthodontics, your dentist will need to check the condition of your gums as any signs of disease could affect the outcome of orthodontic treatment. This is because orthodontics does require the tooth and tooth roots to move and part of the process involves the bone around the tooth roots and other tissues rebuilding themselves and strengthening as the teeth settle into their new positions. This is easily done where the gums and underlying bone are healthy, but if periodontal or gum disease is present then it can result in bone loss.

Deciding on the Right Type of Brace

The Cosmetic Dentistry Center is able to offer quite a large range of braces which include fixed and removable appliances. Removable braces are particularly popular and can be highly effective when used correctly. These consist of clear plastic aligners that fit tightly over the teeth and which need to be worn for at least 22 hours each day. They are removed for brushing and flossing and during meal times so treatment has very little impact on everyday life. There are a couple of other advantages in choosing clear aligners as these trays can be used for tooth whitening during your treatment, and any missing teeth can be disguised by placing a temporary tooth made from composite resin into the aligner.

In spite of their popularity, we do sometimes suggest fixed braces. The idea of having fixed braces can conjure up an image of ugly brackets and wires but modern fixed braces are a little different. They can use clear or ceramic brackets that are extremely discreet and are often powered by a single wire. These types of braces are highly effective in treating more complex problems that require extremely precise tooth movements. Often they can get results within a relatively short space of time.

Wearing Retainers Once Treatment Is Completed

Most types of orthodontic treatment require patients to wear retainers after it is completed. This is to prevent the teeth from moving back into the positions they previously occupied and it enables teeth to begin to stabilize in their new places in your mouth. We can supply extremely discreet retainers that are easy to use. At this stage, you can begin planning for your tooth replacement and you’ll soon have a wonderfully straight, healthy and fully complete smile.
